Hidden Inhabitants: Research Tips for Writers, Investigators & History Nerds

Historical records are selective about the voices they preserve. So how can we uncover the hidden inhabitants of the locations we investigate? How do we learn the names and
stories of the women, servants, and enslaved people who didn’t leave many records behind? With the haunted Oliver House as a case study, this presentation explores some of the
ways we can give a voice to historically marginalized people.

02

The Story of English

This presentation is for all the word nerds! The English language is messy, but it’s also flexible and adaptable — we break grammar “rules” all the time and give new meanings to words. Historical events forged English as we know it, and current events and popular usage continue to propel it forward.

This talk offers a glimpse into the history of English, and you’ll see how the language's adaptability became its superpower.
